Listening to streaming
mp3s
|
|
In order to listen to mp3s you will need an mp3 playing
program.
Your browser is set up to deal with different kinds of files in
different ways. Some files it displays in the browser window
itself, some file types need other applications to display or play
the content.
If you are a Macintosh user, the included mp3
player, iTunes is a good choice.
In OSX: If iTunes is selected as your default media player, your browser will open iTunes automatically after clicking on a link to a .pls (or .m3u) playlist file. To set it: iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> 'Use iTunes for Internet Music Playback'.
If you are a Linux/Unix user, we recommendXMMS for X11. Or mpg123 for shell.
If you are a windows user, we recommend winamp. Windows Media Player and Real Player
feed ads to their users, we do not recommend using them.
Once Winamp is installed it will automatically set itself as the
default player for the files you want to listen to (you can check
this by clicking on the box in the top left of the main WinAmp menu
then Options->Preferences->Setup->File
Types). After you have done this the mp3 files should launch
automatically in winamp when clicked on in your web browser.
mp3 is a compressed audio format, the object of such formats is to
squeeze the highest fidelity from the smallest amount of data.
The files on ianmasters.org are all mp3 format, compressed at 24k
(24 kilobits per second) and 80k.
Most dial-up connections can easily handle 24k/sec. streams.
DSL/Cable and other high speed connections can easily transfer
80k/sec. streams.
Sometimes the data stream will be interrupted or slowed, this is
why data is 'buffered' in the memory of your computer.
